got-confessions:

“GRRM is better than Tolkein because he doesn’t have a moral edge to his stories. It’s what makes them perfect. They show true human nature.”

Go home.
I’ve already written at length about this subject over the past few weeks because of my admissions essay so I don’t feel like going into a lot of detail but to say this makes GRRM better is ridiculous.
GRRM and Tolkien are telling different stories, and both come to different conclusions regarding human nature. While Tolkien’s is more hopeful/optimistic, that does not in any way make it inferior to GRRM’s. Whether or not GRRM is more ‘realistic’ in his portrayal of human nature is debatable as well, imo he just goes to the opposite extreme by making everything so fucking nihilistic.
Anyway, this confession is dumb and the confessor should feel dumb.
I don’t care if people like ASIOAF more than LOTR, that just means you have bad taste and that’s not your fault, a lot of people suffer from bad taste. However, to say that ASOIAF is better than LOTR in any way is just delusional.

Really?
Because based on the past 11 years, I’d say it’s not entirely clear that George does know what he’s doing.
Oh snap!

Sorry if most people don’t think it’s unreasonable for a story to also fucking advance in a 1000 page book that took 6 years to publish (and would’ve taken longer to write if someone, presumably HBO, had not pressured him into publishing an unfinished book). The first three books managed to tell a story and move the plot along just fine. ADWD did not do this. Its plot creeped along and very few plot points were resolved. I get that GRRM wants to show more of the world and that’s just great, but not at the expense of the story. Because I refuse to concede that goddamn river turtles added anything of value to the story.
Just to make this clear, I enjoyed ADWD. I read that shit in two days and couldn’t put it down. But compared to the first three books it is a fucking sorry excuse for a novel from what is supposed to be the “American Tolkien”.
People who criticize George so harshly do so because we know he’s capable of better.

That’s better than what I imagine, which is George typing with one hand while the other is busy in his pants. Enjoy that image.

I SEE YOU LINDA.

I SEE YOU LINDA.

Yes, Daenerys is so fair. She condemns people like Ned Stark as traitors, says he deserved his fate. But when someone like Barristan offers to tell her about her father, who was called the Mad King for a reason, Dany doesn’t want to hear it! WTF?! That’s not being fair or just, that’s shoving your head in the sand because you don’t want to admit you’re wrong.
Dany’s refusal to confront her father’s madness is one of my biggest pet peeves and it seriously drives me up the wall.

um. so i guess i would be okay if you said ‘i don’t like grrm’s writing’ but you didn’t. I think it is pretty obvious that he can write. i think if grrm was a shit writer you wouldn’t think the series was a ‘great idea’ because it would be a total fucking mess. the amount of shit he puts into these books, the planning, the words he chooses to hint at things that are going to happen 3 books down the line, is insane and it blows my mind because every time i read this series i find myself thinking ‘holy shit how didn’t i see [insert event here] coming a mile away?’
and like, have you read the dragon birth scene? or the red wedding? or cersei II? because that shit is just on another fucking level, grrm is always good but those scenes, they are amazing.

I think they have a point. George obviously possesses enough writing skill to tell the story but overall the writing itself is pretty mediocre and at other times downright terrible *cough*everysexsceneever*cough*. He has moments of brilliance though.
When it comes down to it though, I think George most of all is a lazy writer. AFFC and ADWD made that obvious. He says he wanted to focus on worldbuilding during those two books because that is what interests him, but I’d wager it’s because it’s a good deal easier than trying to top the first three books in terms of you know, actual plot. The first three were perfectly adept at creating a convincing and interesting world. This story is in desperate need of a proper editor, not one that kisses his ass and then thanks him for the honor.
/endrant, does this even make sense?

The Myrish Swamp wasn’t enough for you?

The Myrish Swamp wasn’t enough for you?

This makes absolutely no sense.
People get mad about the hate Sansa and Cat get because it’s absolutely over the top and directed at them for stupid reasons. They get hate for the decisions they make despite most male characters making far stupider ones.
Davos and Bran as characters do not even get hate. It is their POVs that people without taste find boring. I’ve seen Davos and Bran’s chapters trashed plenty of times, but very rarely the characters themselves.
This is dumb.
